Woven vs Satin Labels: Which is Right for Your Garment Brand?
Choosing between a woven label and a satin label is one of the first decisions brand owners face when designing their garment labeling. Both are high-quality options — but they serve different purposes, feel different against the skin, and carry different price points.
This guide breaks down everything you need to know.
What is a Woven Label?
A woven label is produced on a weaving loom using yarn threads — typically polyester, cotton, or a blend. The logo, text, and design are woven directly into the fabric structure using individual coloured yarns, creating a textured, three-dimensional appearance.
Key characteristics:
- High-definition logo reproduction using up to 8 thread colours
- Durable, wash-resistant, and UV stable over the garment's lifetime
- Available in broadloom (cut-and-fold) or needle loom (finished selvage edges) production
- Thickness: 0.5mm–1.2mm depending on weave density
Woven labels are the industry standard for brand labels on denim jeans, outerwear, workwear, and premium knitwear. They project quality and permanence.
What is a Satin Label?
A satin label is produced on a satin-weave fabric base — a smooth, lustrous material made from high-lustre polyester yarns. The design is typically printed onto the satin backing using dye-sublimation or screen printing, then the label is cut to size and edges are ultrasonic-sealed or folded.
Key characteristics:
- Extremely smooth, silky surface texture — very soft against the skin
- Bright, photographic-quality colour printing capability
- Thinner and lighter than woven labels (0.15mm–0.3mm)
- Lower cost per unit than equivalent woven labels at high volumes
Satin labels are the preferred choice for care and content labels, lingerie, swimwear, children's clothing, and luxury fashion where a premium soft feel is non-negotiable.

Which Should You Choose?
Choose woven labels if:
- Your brand identity requires a premium, tactile label that feels like it has weight and craft
- You are producing denim, outerwear, sportswear, workwear, or premium knitwear
- You want a label that retains its appearance after 100+ washes
Choose satin labels if:
- Your garment is skin-close (underwear, baby wear, swimwear, t-shirts)
- You need full-colour photographic printing — gradients, fine typography, multi-language care text
- You want the softest possible label experience for the end consumer
Many brands use both: a woven brand label at the neckline or waistband, and a satin care/content label alongside it. This is the most common configuration for premium garment brands.
